Lyngar Supports Abortion Rights – Earns Endorsement from Planned ParenthoodAdvocatesMar Monte
Reno, Nev. — Candidate for Washoe County Commission District 5 came out strongly for abortion rights, following revelations that the U.S. Supreme Court is ready to roll back fifty years of precedent in an anti-democratic attack on women, body autonomy, and human decency.
The draft decision of the right-wing Justices flies in the face of 70% support for Roe v. Wade among Americans. If finalized in its draft form, the Court is certain to accelerate the long-running nationwide effort by a radical minority to criminalize abortion, contraception, and other rights Nevada women expect and deserve.
Candidate Edwin Lyngarearned the endorsement of planned Parenthood Advocates, Mar Monte in April but did not issue a statement because he has no primary opponent. Following Tuesday’s troubling news, Lyngar urged all local candidates to speak out in support of abortion rights.
“This is an ugly attack on women’s autonomy and health care,” Lyngar said. “Men have an important role to play in supporting and speaking out with one voice that this attack on women’s autonomy and healthcare is unacceptable.”
Lyngar entered the race in part to counter growing extremism in Washoe County politics. The Washoe County Commission and the School Board have been under assault in recent years over lies about the 2020 elections, fraudulent claims about critical race theory and sex education, and a host of other manufactured culture war issues. “These divisive and dishonest attacks are driving extremism in our community and making a compromise and good government nearly impossible in local communities,” Lyngar added.
